Practical AI Tools for Digital Accessibility Work

taught by: Bouton Jones
co-presented by: Jan McSorley

Session Summary

This 90-minute session introduces practical ways to use AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot to support digital accessibility work. It is designed for developers, content authors, testers, and accessibility practitioners with basic computer skills. No prior AI experience is required.

Description

The session focuses on using AI as a development and remediation aid, not as a replacement for human judgment. Attendees learn how AI can help with tasks like drafting accessible content, reviewing code for common accessibility issues, supporting large-scale remediation efforts, and improving efficiency on legacy websites.

Topics include writing effective prompts for accessibility tasks, understanding the strengths and limits of AI output, managing risks such as hallucinations and low-quality results, and using AI responsibly as both a productivity tool and, in some cases, an assistive technology. The session uses live examples and practical guidance that attendees can apply immediately in their own work.

Practical Skills

  • Write clear, effective prompts to support accessibility testing, development, and remediation tasks.
  • Recognize common AI failures and validate results against accessibility standards such as WCAG.
  • Use AI tools to save time on large accessibility projects while managing risk and maintaining quality.
