Fill in the Gap: Create Your Own Accessibility Squad

taught by: Kat Weigle

Session Summary

When no one else is prioritizing accessibility for a digital product, you might have to take the reins and create your own accessibility squad to ensure implementation of best practices and thorough testing. In this session, you'll learn about making digital accessibility accessible for your coworkers who know nothing about accessibility.

Description

I will share how I created a cross-functional squad with digital designers, product managers, and developers, some of whom knew little-to-nothing about digital accessibility, to spearhead accessibility-focused initiatives like product testing, design annotation, and developing documentation for scale beyond our team. We've worked toward building accessible features into our product for the sake of our users and not waiting to react because of a potential lawsuit. It's been a journey full of trial and error but also success.

Practical Skills

  • Learn about getting buy-in from coworkers and stakeholders who aren't knowledgable about digital accessibility.
  • Leave with ideas for forming your own team to champion accessibility.
  • Understand the importance and challenge of building and testing accessible digital products before sending them out into the world.
