Don't Sweat the Small Stuff| WCAG Failures First, Best Practices Later

taught by: Lisan Hasnain

Session Summary

Teams often get stuck polishing best practices while major WCAG failures remain unresolved. This session will explore how to prioritize real WCAG failures first so remediation work creates meaningful impact for everyone involved.

Description

Fixing accessibility issues should focus on what actually affects accessibility, not what is easiest to clean up first. Many teams end up spending time fixing best practices while WCAG failures that block users remain unresolved. This session introduces a prioritization approach that helps teams decide which issues to address first before moving into lower-impact improvements. We’ll look at how to assess severity, separate best practice refinements from true WCAG barriers, and create a workflow that keeps effort aligned with meaningful outcomes. Attendees will learn practical methods they can apply during audits, development, and content updates to keep work centered on high-impact fixes before polish. The result is a repeatable prioritization strategy that cuts down on wasted effort and supports faster progress toward WCAG conformance.

Practical Skills

  • Participants will learn how to distinguish best practice improvements from true WCAG failures.
  • Participants will understand how to assess severity and identify which issues have meaningful accessibility impact.
  • Participants will learn a prioritization approach that helps them focus effort on resolving high-impact WCAG failures before spending time on best practices.
