Design Systems - A Pattern for Success

taught by: Kylie Pollock

Session Summary

Design systems are no longer a “nice to have.” True accessible design systems are essential to scaling your digital accessibility initiatives and delivering impactful digital content. Learn where to start, how to grow and all the facts you need to know, to start developing (or improving) your design system.

Description

This session will demystify how to build or extend a design system with accessibility at its core. Blending governance, design, technical implementation, and AI supported processes to build accessible solutions from the start.

This session will take you through steps to get your design system up and running. Giving you a solid pattern for success. Learn:
• How to develop a roadmap for robust design systems
• What content is essential to ensure your design system provides complete coded examples of accessible solutions
• How to manage adoption rates
• Where AI can increase the efficiency of your solution
• What does not fit within the scope of your design systems, and where to focus your accessibility SMEs to ensure gaps and managed and risk assessed.

Participants will walk away with a clear roadmap, practical skills, and see step by step design system implementations. For those adventurist among us, you can even follow along replicating the examples in Figma as we go.

Practical Skills

  • Understand the purpose, intent and benefits of implementing (or extending) your design system with accessibility.
  • Learn how to construct detailed designs systems and utilise AI appropriately to speed the implementation.
  • Able to explain the cost, time benefits and identify a strategy for the creation of their own design system.
