Decoding WCAG Color and Contrast requirements

taught by: Jonathan Whiting

Session Summary

In this hands-on session, we will dig into the contrast and color requirements in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2. We will learn how WCAG defines "contrast" and "use of color," what it requires in these two areas, and how to evaluate these requirements on the web using free tools.

Description

Contrast and color use are among the trickiest areas in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). There are intersecting requirements at Level A, AA, and AAA, and pages of fine print that can overwhelm designers, developers, and content creators.

This session breaks down the color and contrast requirements in WCAG 2.0 and 2.1—and what is new in WCAG 2.2—translating complex rules into clear, actionable guidance. Through examples and hands-on exploration, we will dig deeply into what is required (and not required) in WCAG 2, and how to test these requirements. Participants will practice color and contrast evaluation using free tools including the WebAIM contrast checker.

Bring your computer with the Chrome browser installed. All other tools will be introduced during the session.
