Engagement With Inclusion: Designing Accessible Content and Interactive Learning for Every Student
Inclusive virtual learning starts with accessible content and continues through every poll, chat, and activity. This session uses Universal Design for Learning to show educators how to create accessible materials and design interactive experiences that every student, including learners with disabilities and neurodivergent learners, can fully take part in.
Grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and informed by more than two decades of experience producing accessible virtual and hybrid events, this session offers practical strategies for creating accessible learning materials and inclusive interactive activities. Participants will learn to make content more accessible, offer multiple ways for students to participate and respond, and give learners greater flexibility to customize their virtual experience.
Through practical examples and an actionable inclusion checklist, participants will learn how to identify barriers, rethink one-size-fits-all activities, and evaluate virtual or hybrid platforms for accessibility. They will leave with strategies they can apply to their next lesson, workshop, or training session to help every student participate meaningfully.
Takeaways:
- Recognize the interactive design choices that exclude students with disabilities and neurodivergent learners.
- Create and share accessible content, including slides, documents, images, video, and activity questions, as the foundation for inclusive interactive learning.
- Apply UDL’s Engagement and Action & Expression principles to polls, chat, games, and group work.
