Inclusive Data Visualization with ParaCharts

taught by: Doug Schepers
co-presented by: Simon Varey, Josh Fennell

Session Summary

Data visualizations like charts are often challenging to make accessible. We'll describe dataviz problems and solutions, and introduce ParaCharts, a new data visualization tool that makes it easy to create and publish charts on your website that are fully accessible to people with a wide variety of disabilities.

Description

This session will describe the challenges of making accessible dataviz, showcase how ParaCharts overcomes these challenges, and provide hands-on training for you to use and customize it.

We'll provide a detailed exploration of dataviz accessibility principles, and share best practices, standards guidance, tips, and things to avoid. We'll cover issues with the most common chart types and some types of maps, for various disabilities, with consideration for cognitive load. We'll also give guidance for writing alt text or text descriptions for charts and maps.

In most cases, the ParaCharts chart software will automate these accessibility solutions. ParaCharts is built from the ground up with accessibility in mind, and includes many innovative approaches to address the data needs of people with blindness, low vision, and cognitive disabilities. It includes support for interactive automatic summaries at every level, sonification, and even refreshable braille displays, embossing printers, and audio-tactile displays.

After learning about each consideration, you'll get hands-on experience in using ParaCharts to provide equivalent affordances. The dataviz accessibility knowledge you gain will apply to any charts, not just those made by ParaCharts. You'll know not just how, but why, to resolve each accessibility issue.

You don't need to know anything about accessibility or data visualization to make inclusive charts with ParaCharts… but this session will give you a solid grounding in both.

Practical Skills

  • You will understand how different disabilities and assistive technologies affect access to charts and other data visualizations, and how to apply this to solve dataviz issues.
  • You will learn methods and tools to analyze and evaluate the accessibility of a chart, with specific techniques and open-source software tools.
  • You will create accessible charts using the ParaCharts software, demonstrating and reinforcing the principles of dataviz accessibility.
