Automating Digital Accessibility: How AI Can Streamline WCAG Compliance

taught by: Michael Bervell
co-presented by: Jason Tan

Session Summary

As AI continues to advance, how much of digital accessibility remediation can be automated? This session explores the capabilities and limitations of AI in automating WCAG compliance, showing how organizations can leverage AI-powered tools to streamline accessibility workflows while maintaining human oversight.

Description

Digital accessibility compliance remains a costly and time-consuming process, often requiring manual audits, remediation, and extensive training. While AI-powered tools have emerged to help identify and even fix accessibility violations, their effectiveness varies. This session will explore the current state of AI in accessibility, including its ability to detect and remediate WCAG violations, provide real-time developer training, and accelerate compliance workflows.

We’ll discuss the types of accessibility errors AI can reliably fix—such as missing alt text, color contrast issues, and keyboard navigation errors—as well as areas where human expertise remains indispensable, like complex navigation structures and contextual content interpretation. Through live demonstrations, case studies, and hands-on exercises, attendees will gain practical insights into how organizations can combine automation with human oversight to create a more scalable and efficient approach to accessibility.

By the end of this session, participants will understand how AI-driven solutions fit into their accessibility strategies, what current limitations exist, and how to implement best practices for leveraging AI in compliance efforts.
