Accessibility on Aisle Three: Discussions of Digital and Physical Accessibility Practices in Grocery Retail Environments

taught by: Audrey Reinert
co-presented by: Vanesa Ayon

Session Summary

This talk will focus on how the application of accessibility practices and Universal Design principles combined with digital innovation benefit both customers and employees in large retail chains. We will specifically focus on how a large grocery retailer can incorporate these practices into daily operations while increasing customer satisfaction.

Description

In an era where food access remains a critical social issue, grocery stores serve as more than just retail spaces—they represent a vital community hub that can bridge societal divides. By nature of serving and employing residents, grocery retailers are uniquely sensitive to the accessibility needs of the community they serve. However, each store location serves and employs slightly different demographics and thus, the instore and online accessibility solutions need to be tailored to meet the needs of the community. This talk offers a behind the aisles look at how the thoughtful integration of digital and physical accessibility transforms grocery stores into truly inclusive spaces that strengthen community bonds.

Through real-world case studies ranging from parking lot planning for accessibility to developing applications that allow you to discreetly request support during the online and in-person shopping experience, we'll examine how Universal Design principles and digital innovations work in tandem to create in person and online shopping experiences that serve everyone—from elderly shoppers managing mobility challenges to neurodivergent individuals navigating sensory-rich environments. We'll explore practical solutions like:

• How mobile apps and digital wayfinding can complement physical store layout to support diverse shopping needs

• The role of sensory-conscious design in creating welcoming spaces for all community members

• Ways that digital tools can enhance traditional accessibility features while fostering community connection

• Strategies for balancing high-tech solutions with high-touch human interaction

• Applying lessons from food safety and handling to improve in-store accessibility

• Designing accessible shopping experiences -including low stimulation hours- to help serve the community

Our talk will focus on three specific use cases

• Understanding and developing store-by-store level handicap parking plans and other accommodations

• Designing tools to signal when stores have high foot traffic to avoid shopping at peak times (especially important for wheelchair bound, and visually impaired customers)

• Designing practices and procedures to empower customers to request checkout support, discreetly, for both bagging and transport

Attendees will leave with an actionable framework for evaluating and improving both physical and digital accessibility in retail spaces, understanding how these elements work together to create grocery stores that don't just serve communities—they help build them.
