AIR Judge-Mentor Volunteer Form

Thank you for your interest in supporting AIR! Knowbility's annual Accessibility Internet Rally relies on the skills of knowledgable mentors, judges, and trainers. If you've participated in past AIR competitions or simply want to share your experience with those who are learning about digital accessibility, we'd love your help - thank you! Be A Team Mentor

One mentor is assigned to each team. You will work exclusively with them for the entire 8 weeks of the competition - helping them understand, anticipate, and solve accessibility challenges. Mentors may not provide actual code but can point teams to useful resources and suggest effective strategies. Mentor training is provided and volunteers are supported by Knowbiltiy staff and the Lead Mentor.

Mentor Qualifications

  • Have expert level knowledge of WCAG.
  • Have expert level knowledge of accessibility techniques.
  • Have expert level knowledge of WAI-ARIA practices
  • Understand front-end development.
  • Have expert knowledge of doing accessibility assessments including the use of automated accessibility tools and screen readers.
  • Possess Project Management Skills
  • Experience with mobile accessibility.
  • Have participated in AIR or OpenAIR before as a team member, mentor, or judge.

Be an AIR Judge

Judges enter the scene after the sites have been finalized and submitted for scoring. Each judge will score two web sites and each site is reveiwed by two different judges. The scoring rubric is the customized AIR judging form. If the scores diverge, judges will meet and discuss so that they agree to a final score that is submitted to the Lead Judge. Training is provided and volunteers are supported by Knowbiltiy staff and the Lead Judge.

Judge Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of how people with disabilities use the web and what they need to succeed.
  • Expert level knowledge of accessibility standards - ATAG, UAAG, WCAG, ARIA, and BBC Mobile Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Have participated in AIR or OpenAIR before as a team member, mentor, or judge.
