A Case Study in Designing a (Mostly) Accessible eCommerce Website

taught by: Karen Hawkins

Session Summary:

This talk is a case study in how you can successfully and meaningfully incorporate consideration of web accessibility into the entire digital design process. From the style guide to wireframes to final design comps, I will walk the audience through the design thinking that went into the complete redesign of an eCommerce website.

Description:

My client engaged Bounteous to redesign their website. It was an opportunity I’d been dreaming of: the chance to completely redesign an eCommerce experience from scratch with a client who values web accessibility, and with a team who is knowledgeable and experienced in web accessibility.

This talk is a case study in how you can successfully and meaningfully incorporate consideration of web accessibility into the entire digital design process. From the style guide to wireframes to final design comps, I will walk the audience through the design thinking that went into the new website. I will highlight when and where incorporating web accessibility was a slam dunk, where all participants were 100% on board and in agreement, and we sometimes found it to be easy. However, I will also highlight aspects of the design that required a lot more collaborative effort, a few resulting in one participant or another not being wholly satisfied with the end result.

eCommerce is complicated at the best of times. Many eCommerce sites suffer from usability issues, and few are accessible. Hear a story of collaboration, where a collection of engaged professionals broke the mold to tackle this inherently complicated problem.

  • Learn how to apply accessibility design thinking to typical eCommerce components, and why and how that can change from wireframes to final design comps
