[Accessibility_sig] Laptop Computer

Thank you very much. I was using three separate computers for a while; a
desktop at home, a desktop at work and a Dell Inspiron I picked up in 2005.
I am wanting to switch to using only one computer due to short term memory
issues.

I have poor short term memory as a result of my head injury, I found it
difficult, for this reason, to keep track of which files are on my laptop,
whihc are on my desktop at home and which are on my desktop computer at
work. I am currently using only my laptop at work and my desktop computer at
home.

I am not using my laptop at home right now because I need to use different
settings to log on to the internet at home. The only way I could log on
both at home and work was to set up two separate user accounts, one for home
and one for work. I found this almost as hard to keep track of as using two
separate computers. I am curious about a Vista machine because I heard that
it Vista made it much easier to switch between internet accounts. I heard,
in other words, that it would be very simple for me to log on to the
internet at both home and work if I were using Vista.

I am simply trying to find a way to make my life more simple by using only
one computer for all of my files. I am glad to hear you have seen difference
between Dell, Toshiba and HP. Have you heard anything abotu Gateway? I hear
that Gateway laptops have a numerid keypad included on their keyboards.

William,

The main issue that I have found with laptops and JAWS has been the limited
laptop keyboard. If you can find one with a keyboard that includes a numpad
it will be much easier to learn to use without the need to lug around a
separate keyboard or learn new keystrokes.

You should also consider processing power and OS compatibility. I am still
getting anecdotal reports about problems with VISTA and JAWS working and
playing well together. I have not personally tested this. If you must go
with VISTA make sure that you are running JAWS 9 with the latest patches for
the optimal experience and consider an upgrade to 10 as soon as it is
available. Whether you are running VISTA or XP get a model with a good
graphics card, plenty of memory and a reasonably fast processor. I know it
sounds strange to need a good graphics card when you’re running JAWS, but
JAWS actually depends on the graphics processing to do its job. If you are
running both JAWS and a screen magnifier you will need to step up the
technical requirements even further.

I have used JAWS, ZoomText and to a lesser extent Window Eyes and Magic on
laptops built by Toshiba, Dell and HP. I have not found much difference in
the compatibility among the hardware manufacturers.

Good hunting.

Mike

Can anyone offer me advice on computers that work well with Jaws? I am
looking for a laptop that I can use at home, the office na dplaces such as
libraries, coffee shops, etc. Are there any machines that work particularly
well wtih Jaws? Are there any laptops I should avoid because they do not
work well with Jaws?

I would apreciate any feedback I can get about this issue.
